The 0-5 Indianapolis Colts…doesn’t that look odd? This powerhouse of a franchise of recent times sits in the NFL cellar, but top in perhaps the most important sub-category this season; they have homefield advantage in the Andrew Luck Bowl Series. Peyton Manning has dominated this city for fourteen years and I remember the hype from before he entered the NFL as the No.1 overall pick in 1998 out of Tennessee. If news was beginning to travel fast in the late Nineties, then compare that to the technological wizardy at our fingertips now and the hyperbole surrounding Luck far usurps anything Manning generated as he prepared to enter the professional ranks.
As I wrote in my weekly Power Rankings this week, the intrigue deepens should the Colts possess the No. 1 overall pick next April and Manning is completely healthy again. My view? The Colts take Luck and he learns from one of the greatest of all time. Why this obsession with Luck? I’ll tell you why…Indianapolis have only been blown out of the water once this season, in Week 1 in Houston, so they’re keeping games close by playing hard, but they lack leadership with Manning sidelined and, Manning aside, in fact, any team on a losing streak such as theirs is going to attract attention with Luck waiting to be courted, but the Colts’ story is perhaps the most headline grabbing for one reason. Can Indy really luck (sorry!) out twice, first with Manning and now with Luck? The King is Dead. Long Live The King.
This week promises much of the same for the Colts, too, as they head to Cincinnati and their quite incredible defense. Throughout NFL lore, a dominating defense attracts a creative moniker and while the Bengals were tight lipped last week, well, this week, they just couldn’t be more vocal. I urge you to look this story up as it’s nice seeing the unheralded have their time in the sun so check out ‘The Uso Defense’, Cincinnati’s self-titled D. It may also help you familiarise yourself with some of the players causing a quiet stir around the league, but these guys are almost loving that nobody seems to know who they are.
