A curious stat to begin with here: one of these teams’ defenses ranks tenth in the league against both the run and the pass. One of them ranks sixteenth against the run. The team with the twin tenth places are underdogs by almost two touchdowns.
Pittsburgh positively trounced the Tennessee Titans at Heinz Field last Sunday and a similar fate should await another AFC South team this week on the same turf. I wrote in my weekly Power Rankings that there was surely no way the 11 (OK, 11.8) points per game Jaguars would threaten the Steelers this week and it would appear that the only way for them to keep this close enough to cover the spread is for RB Maurice Jones-Drew to continue his current form. He’s only 44 yards shy of leading the league in rushing and the burden rests heavily on him, not just this week, but for the rest of the season.
Are Pittsburgh going to dare to flirt with cruise control this week? The Titans were heavily fancied to waltz out of Steel Town with the W last Sunday and came up against exactly what I thought they might. Nobody waltzes into Pittsburgh, lauded by thousands, without expecting the bruised home combatant to come out with a roar. The Steelers will be nothing like as up for this one and will probably find themselves pushed harder in the process.
Jags’ Head Coach, Jack Del Rio, looks to be drinking in the last chance saloon and depending on what you decide to believe, he either can’t exit the locker room quickly enough or his players are going to fight for him. This being the NFL, no team will ever readily stand accused of lacking fight and perhaps the propspect of playing in a city so steeped in NFL lore will inspire Jacksonville to give all they can for their beleagured coach.
Either way, this is tough to call on the handicap and these double digit spreads often are. I’ve not even mentioned either Ben Roethlisberger or Blaine Gabbert in this yet…so, just have. Ben was hot last week so it figures he’ll be a little less so this week. Blaine ranks 30th in the league in passing and will get very little change when throwing against Pittsburgh’s No. 1 ranked pass defense.
With the Steelers on a small, expected come down, I take the Jaguars with the points, but with serious reservations.
